You had a great name Fred at the bench, but for us at Mizizi and the several occasions I met you, you were a humble man. Humorous in great measure, a wise counsel and indeed a community philanthropist. The heavens are happy, forever missed Justice Fred.
James Oware
It is almost one year since you departed, a great friend and fond brother you were. Selfless soul that knew no defined boundary of faith, creed, charity and stewardship to both man and God. You kept at chest your work and social diary; meticulously marked your dates and was never late at any event. A true definition of humility embodied with empathy and love for society. Behind the scenes, your philanthropy often stretched to lift the lowly especially in educational support. Your status was undefined, a common man ever within reach with your frequent fellowship with us at MIZIZI and other social fora. Through you, I met many within your work circles, the Catholic religious and family. A true inherent spirit of Kijana. Indeed, I was most privileged. I will greatly miss your counsel delivered with comic humor. You were a round table master of family life and an exemplary heart to behold. Your brilliant dances among other Catholic Men Association (CMA) members at Our Lady Queen of Peace - Muhoroni Parish during major Mass celebrations remain etched in our memories. The 'MIZIZI family' keeps watching your vacant seat remain empty and silent at your most favorite corner while praying for your soul because this was your footrest any time you ever came home. Your early rest amidst many great post work plans was such a great loss not only to us but Muhoroni community, the Kijana family, judiciary and the nation at large. Fair thee well Big Brother Fred.
Miss Wanzuu
I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Justice Fredrick but met his lovely wife and had his daughter as a friend. They are all incredibly warm and loving individuals. His daughter spoke very highly of him both as a father and a professional. I pray that the great life he lived will continue to inspire all that knew him and may his legacy live on through his family. 🙏🏾

I didn't know the judge much, but the uncle that lent me his Tintin magazines squeezed amidst these great big burgundy books with Roman numerals on each in sequence...well that man I can speak volumes on. Despite being significantly taller, I looked up to him. Rest well.

Daddy was a gentleman of presence. Not the kind that simply occupies a room, but the kind that fills hearts. Whether at home, on the farm, at church or among family, colleagues and friends, he showed up fully, consistently, and with purpose. Growing up Daddy was the priest of our home , a steady spiritual guide who led with humility, faith, and quiet strength. Through him, we learned the value of prayer, of gratitude, and of trusting God in all seasons. At home, he was our anchor. A father who was present in every sense of the word. He celebrated life with us, every birthday, every baptism, every milestone. If there was joy to be marked, Daddy was there, front and centre, reminding us that life is meant to be lived and celebrated together. He loved simply, but deeply. His favorite meal, involved adila mayom - maziwa mala, nyuka, kuon but also chips and chicken ocassionally ice-cream. A quiet reminder of his grounded nature. He found joy in the simple things, yet gave so much meaning to the lives around him. Daddy also had a way with words, often repeating phrases that became part of us. One he said many times, with conviction and gratitude, was, “I am alive and well.” It was more than a statement, it was a posture, a mindset, a quiet declaration of contentment and strength. And, incidentally, that word itself became one of his most frequently used expressions, spoken with a quiet confidence that was uniquely his. He was also a delightfully eclectic collector in the most endearing sense. Some things we understood, others we laughed about, but all of them told a story. He collected newspapers, hi-fives, nail cutters, fabulous shirts, kitenge, shoes, ties, handkerchiefs, cars, the best chocolate, and even pillows. Healways shared his favorite drinks, and in another life, we are convinced he would have owned a vineyard or something beautifully close to a fine bottle of whiskey. He held on to all theeditions ofGuinness World Records, enjoyed Kenyan music, and faithfully watched Kenyan shows. These were not just habits, they were reflections of a man who appreciated life in its richness and variety. As a husband, Daddy loved Mama loudly and intentionally. He expressed love through gift giving and acts of service, not just at home, but in his work, his friendships, and across the family. He never missed a chance to show it, whether through flowers every Valentine’s Day, thoughtful gestures, shared laughter on dates, or the many journeys they took together. Their love was not hidden, it was lived, seen, and felt, a beautiful example to all of us. On the farm, Daddy was hands-on. He tilled the land, made decisions with wisdom, and invested not just finances, but heart and vision into every project. He taught us that growth, whether in the soil or in life, requires patience, commitment, and faith. As an investor and mentor, he instilled in us values that will outlive him. The importance of saving, of building, of creating stability and legacy. Through SACCOs, through land, through wise decisions, he showed us that wealth is not just what you have, but what you build for generations to come. As a grandfather, Daddy was joy itself. Playful, warm, and full of life. His hugs were not just embraces, they were safe places. In his presence, you felt loved, seen, and secure. And as a father in law, he was more than family, he was a friend, a guide, and a steady source of wisdom and kindness. As his daughters, we knew a very special version of Daddy. He loved us deeply, looked after us intentionally, and celebrated us loudly. He took exceptional care of the ladies in his life, ensuring we felt valued, protected, and cherished. We did not have to wonder if we were loved, we knew it, we saw it, and we lived it every day. On Thursday, as we mark this closing of the file, we recognize that while a chapter may formally come to an end, Daddy’s legacy is anything but closed. It lives on in the values he taught, the love he gave, the lives he shaped, and the memories we will carry forward. Daddy lived fully. He loved deeply. And he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to speak, quietly, powerfully, and forever. We love you Daddy!

I was a beneficiary of one of Hon. JA Ochieng’s Judgements as Judge sometime in 2003. A well thought out decision and as a result got back to my then workplace at continued elsewhere until I retired in 2023 That decision put my career as in house counsel back on track. In later years he told me how fond he was of my late father. Late Hon. Andrew J. Omanga. We later interracted a bit when my wife Hon. Frida was Registrar of the JSC. May he travel well to the next world. May his soul be received in Heaven 🙏🏽
Robin SITIIRIO Momanyi
Fare thee well, schoolmate and friend of many years. May you travel well to the next world.

Hon. Justice Fred A. Ochieng, a distinguished jurist, holds a unique place in our history as the first member of the Judiciary to join the Okil Kamaloka Welfare Association (OKWA) at a time when such a step required quiet courage and conviction. He did not merely join, he participated. He stood with us in our initiatives. He personally supported the establishment of a library and computer lab at Migingo Integrated School in Kisumu, reflecting his firm belief in education as a tool for empowerment. He demonstrated his faith in our collective vision by becoming the first member from the Judiciary to invest in our Kibos project-an act that spoke not in words, but in commitment. Beyond these contributions, we remember the man. Many of us will recall his thoughtful morning text messages - simple, reflective, and deeply human, through which he reached out, encouraged, and connected. He stood with OKWA members in times of celebration and in times of loss, never seeking recognition, but always present. As we close this file, we do so with a profound sense of loss, yet with gratitude for a life lived with purpose, humility, and quiet generosity. Justice F. Ochieng’s legacy endures not only in his judgments, but in the lives he touched and the example he set. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Ekaterina Handa Chairperson, Okil Kamaloka Welfare Association (OKWA)

I had the privilege to have sat in one classroom between the years 1972-1975 with my departed friend at Nyabondo Secondary School in Kisumu County. And with nostalgia I want to attest to his academic brilliance. The man had six straight ones, in fact they were eight, for those of us who can still recall the gradings which were then being awarded for the East African Academic Examinations ,which accorded him a maximum top performance with 6 points after which he joined Lenana High School for his Form 5 and 6. Listening to testimonies from his peers in the Judiciary, during his funeral, I just concluded that Andago Ochieng continued to excel in his work even after he left Nyabondo. What a spectacle of a gentleman. !! May I extend my prayers to his family as we remember Fred. And finally thank God for the opportunity I had to grace a secondary school with him

Some judges leave office quietly, and a few leave footprints. Justice FOA left giant footprints. Rest well judge.

Justice Andago Ochieng, you left a profound void—one we are still striving to comprehend and accept, across the legal fraternity and the wider community you so faithfully served. To us here in your village, Muhoroni, you remained simply “Justice Fred”—a name spoken with familiarity and respect. You gave generously, not only of your intellect but also of your means, supporting colleagues, friends, and community members with sincerity and consistency. Your friendships were enduring, your counsel candid, and your disdain for pretension unmistakable. Despite your distinguished station, you remained accessible and attentive, ever ready to listen and to guide. Your steadfast commitment to the Christian faith and to our Church reflected a life anchored in service, humility, and conviction. Gifted with a keen sense of humor and a discerning mind, you communicated with admirable clarity and resolved challenges with quiet ingenuity. In you, wisdom met humanity in its finest expression. Rest with the Angels

Caroline Kendagor, Judge
Justice Ochieng indefatigably led us in piloting and rolling out of Court Annexed Mediation. With vision, he saw the frontier and claimed it for justice. With wisdom he taught disputants to settle in mediation and not just look for a win. We are because of you Judge, Asante. Shine on your way.

It's been almost a year since your untimely departure my big brother and great confidant. However, your charisma, camaraderie, generosity, humility, humour, empathy, wisdom and integrity remains embedded in the minds of us who knew ans related with you closely. Your cheerful and amiable personality endeared you to many of us who have found the void you left completely unfillable. Justice Fred, the Mizizi family misses you, the Muhoroni community misses you. We will forever remember the great deeds that made the community a better place to be in. Shine in glory my brother... fare thee well... It is well.

I was just admitted in March 2016 and appeared before him in Milimani shortly thereafter. I had drafted a very good response to an application on the instructions by my client in a certain matter. The opposing counsel (a very senior one at the moment) decided to shift from the case in court and attack my credibility. He filed an application seeking to strike out all my documents on the sole ground that I was not an advocate and thus the documents had been drawn by an unqualified person. I was so hurt. I filed a replying affidavit attaching all evidence of my legal training that I would come across upto the admission certificate. We get to court for directions and the senior sends his associate with instructions to withdraw the instant application. I was fuming. There is no way this would go without substantive determination and of course costs to follow the event. I was so furious at the insult by a senior colleague. Justice Ochieng after listening to me put down his pen and addressed me like a father. "You have the entire practice ahead of you. Let this go and don't let it obstruct your mind. In my time here I have seen these characters many a times and always know their intentions." He then sent the associate with a warning to her senior. I saw in him a very real person. It made me believe from the onset that at the bench sat fathers and mothers. One of them has departed but his impact will live on.

He was a rare kind of man—one who gave guidance without pride, listened without judgment, and stood by me without hesitation. My first and best memory is the specialised trial advocacy classes conducted through Justice Advocacy Africa in the early 2010s. Judge was generous with his knowledge on the art of persuasion and rhetoric. While at that training Ibrahim and Majnja learned they'd been appointed judges under the CoK 2010 and I recall Justice Ochieng being so happy for them. We will fondly remember.
Kennedy Chweya Onsembe

Good judge, My lasting memory of you is when you subtly and politely pointed out that avail has no relation whatsoever with the word available. Therefore, it is a gross violation of the English language to say that "I will avail the physical copies of the pleadings." Rest well Judge. You live on through your decisions.
Clifford Odhiambo Gwada
Hon. Justice F. Ochieng was not only a believer in the rule of law, but was equally a firm believer in timely dispensation of justice where the learned judge delivered well researched and well reasoned judgements. The Republic of Kenya and particularly the legal fraternity lost a true servant of the people. May his soul rest in eternal peace

Hon. Mr Justice Fred Ochieng, I walked into your office in Kisumu - just about an hour before a routine Kamkunji you were chairing for laywers and Magistrates i needed 5 minutes to sensitize lawyers to join our training on Digital Forensic Evidence & Law and General Data Protection Regulation. Ah you gave me all the audience and time to speak with the legal professionals. My voice was shaking but your calmness remains with me todate. You understood what it means to hand hold someone starting out in business. Your humility and chance you gave me enabled an excellent turn out during our seminar. I took it upon myself to then find out exactly who you are, only to discover how close we are. I am forever grateful Justice Ochieng. Keep dancing the catholic rhymes in heaven
